Information Paralysis

I only had some vague conception before about information paralysis and thought it did not apply to me, until I watched a members only video* just recenlty elaborating on what information paralysis is. It’s got something to do with a cycle that is never ending which can trap one who is not watchful enough. I think this has some relation to information overload and analysis paralysis(?).

The Information Paralysis Cycle

Of course, I realized immediately that I’ve been a victim of information paralysis, and has been trapped in it for a considerable time. The video sort of became an instrument to wake me up and gave me space to consider what I could do about my dilemma.

My harddrive now contains a considerable number of information products related to keyword research, affiliate marketing, IM, Adsense, list building, backlinking, linkbuilding, traffic techniques, product creation, autoresponder methods, PLR, etc., etc.

Did I enjoy the results as promised in the sales pages of those products? Nope!

Why?

My first reaction would be to blame those gurus and authors who made those products and accuse them of selling crap! All those digital products are nothing but rehashed information anyone can find in the internet. They make ebooks that only suggest what you should do but never really give you the details because they are holding the information up as a supplement ebook which you then need to buy next.

I can go on and on. And it’s not only me who’s ranting this way. You’ll also find the same complaints being made everywhere… in forums, in blogs, etc.

The Truth

The complaints I made above might be partly true in a few cases, but in most of those products the “no results” outcome is due solely to my own inaction.

How to Break the Information Paralysis Death Cycle

Yes, the single event that can break the Information Paralysis Death Cycle is to

‘Take Action‘.

Let’s see what effect ‘Taking action’ has if inserted on the cycle this time.

As you can see, it now loses its death trap appearance. You can still go ahead with the cycle but instead of you being trapped in it, you have full control (of when you want to dive back into the cycle) because you do it this time in the form of ‘rinse and repeat’ or to go look for more avenues for income generation.

Ok. You need not believe me because I’m no guru who has years of experience in my belt. Like I implied earlier, I have just realized all this and awakened from the nightmare trap. I am now working to implement this plan and see what’s in store ahead for me . If you want to ride along, you may visit this blog every now and then and see how I fare. After all, my byline is “learning seo and blogging by experience”.

My Goals For 2011

I actually created a written (on a little piece of scrap paper) list of goals last year that I then kept in my wallet. I think I was able to re-read that list a whooping total of 2 times during the whole year. If I recall right, only a fraction of those goals came to some sort of fruition. But then, I never really did serious work on those goals, like the way I did not follow up on some seo experiments I started last year. Had I however focused a little on those goals, I’m pretty sure I’d have accomplished something.

So, now I’m back to the drawing board to draft up another list of goals for 2011, thanks to Patricia of lavenderuses.com and Sire of wassupblog who gave me that little ‘extra push’ to get me off my couch and do some action for a change. This time, I’m converting this list into jpeg format so I could post it as a wallpaper on my notebook. This way, I’ll be reminded of the goals everytime I open my notebook.

Update Existing Websites

I have a few other websites other than this blog which have specific niche targets. Some of these sites have long achieved first page serp status because of some seo work I did on them. The others however seemed to require a little more work to move up the ranks. These are the sites I need to act on starting on the first quarter of 2011. If I could get them to rise to the first pages of the serps, I’ll definitely be emboldened and motivated to again create new websites of the same kind.

This was actually how I realized that I’m actually the ‘glass half empty’ kind of guy. Some of my sites just seemed to not move up the serp inspite of the seo work I clocked on it. My eagerness to create more websites was thus dampened, and I stopped producing new sites. I seemed to have forgotten that I also got some sites up there (on google’s first pages) due to the same type of seo work and am reaping some monetary rewards for it now. Talk about prefering to look not at the bright side of things. 🙂

Create New Sites

Partly, the reason why I stopped researching and making more sites, is because my MNF (and now my Market Samurai) quit working on my machine. Either my Win7 copy or some other application I’ve installed has something that clashes with it. I’m contemplating on doing a reformat and reinstallation on my notebook. In the meantime, I have installed MNF on my wife’s netbook and it’s working nicely there. I guess I’ll re-install Market Samurai there too.

I aim to create more new sites to add to my portfolio of sites. Hopefully, the new sites will augment my online income with Amazon. Speaking of Amazon, I found out that my earnings took a spike during this recent holiday season, even though the products I was marketing are not gift-related. In fact it’s office equipment. Perhaps people just tend to buy more during the holiday season. Or, the year end bonuses have something to do with it perhaps?

Create An E-book

Most blogs I’ve browsed through have some free ‘something’ to offer its readers, which most often, if not always, come in the form of an e-book. I have yet to come up with the subject matter to write about though. I think that once this ebook comes out, this blog will then have found its niche to focus on.

Build A List

I shivered when I typed this particular goal. I already have some idea of how listbuilding works, but I still feel like I’m in the middle of a thick jungle and wouldn’t know how (or, more like, doesn’t have the guts) to crank up the initial creation stage. I have a mind to enroll myself in some online course for listbuilding but I’m also scared to get myself scammed with courses that offer crap outdated information. I have this feeling however that all I’m actually doing is imprisoning myself inside all these ‘fears’ and doubts of mine in this area. Perhaps, all it actually requires of me is to just simply take the plunge. After all, if all those sales pages are to be believed (what? It’s really all crap?), if a 14-year-old can do it, I’m sure I also can.

Level Up My Photography

I know I have yet a lot to learn and need to exert hours and hours more of practice with my camera. Still, I intend to soon make a gallery of my best shots and find a way to monetize this hobby of mine. Photography is fun, but wouldn’t it be a lot more fun if I can earn from it at the same time?

Well, there you go – my list of goals for 2011. Of course, the above-listed goals are only those related to blogging and online activities. I have a lot of other personal goals which I prefer to keep ‘for my eyes only‘. 🙂

To raise my chances of keeping these goals up front always and work on them until the end of 2011, I end this post with an invocation:

My Simple Business Plan: The Prequel

Knowing what I know now so far, I would have started out with the following simple business plan, and I would have earned what I am earning now quite sooner and hopefully a little bit more.

Get MNF or some other keyword research tool e.g. Market Samurai. Again, as I’ve stated in an earlier post (Manual Keyword Research Method), I can still work things out without Micro Niche Finder. But experience dictates that if I want to find profitable keywords faster, I’d have no second thoughts regarding the effectiveness of MNF. I’d estimate that I’m able to find a good keyphrase in a couple of search-focused hours using MNF. This owuld roughly be equivalent to, say, a whole week of focused manual searching using Google Adwords Keywords tool and further manual verification. Sometimes, if I get really lucky, I’d get a good keyphrase in a single click using MNF’s ‘Brainstorm’ feature.
Having found one or more good keyphrases using MNF, I’d further refine my investigation on the profitability of the keyphrase using the free version of Traffic Travis. Using its ‘SEO Analysis’ feature, I’d further see how I’d fare with the competition.
Having made sure my keyphrases are good, I’d proceed to get me webhosting (if I didn’t have one yet) for at least a year. Lunarpages should be good enough, as like a lot of webhosts they also offer unlimited domains and subdomains. Since Lunarpages offers a FREE domain, I’d use one of the keyphrases as my primary domain. Most veteran webmasters would advise limiting oneself to only the .com, .net and .org tld extensions.
If I have more than one good keyphrases to start with, I’d buy these domain names, say, from Godaddy or Moniker.
Collect data for content of each website I’m putting up.
Decide whether to use WordPress or static html/PHP pages. If I foresee that a particular website will have a lot of pages, I’ll go for WordPress. If a website is to contain only one, 2, or 12 pages, I’d use html/PHP. And this is possible only because I already have some knowledge in html/PHP. Otherwise, I’d use wordpress for all websites I put up, one-pager or multi-pager.
Create the websites and the pages it is to contain.
Configure my cPanel in my webhost to hold the websites for each domain.
Install WordPress (if using wordpress) for each domain and input the contents. (Here, I add AdSense codes (once my application gets approved) in the content. Depending on the main keyphrase, I may also add links to Amazon products.*)
Try to get the new websites indexed by Google by creating a backlink to the sites from sites that Google crawls often.
*Apply for Adsense account. Apply for Amazon affiliate account.
Do backlinking work. A lot of people say that the rate of backlinking is to be limited especially in the first few weeks of a website’s existence. It’s got something to do with avoiding getting thrown into Google’s sandbox.

Henceforth, all I’ll be doing is backlinking work and some on site work, e.g. adding additional pages, editting, etc. And, of course, monitoring of my Google serp position. Well, I’m no longer that newbie but I now follow this simple business plan that I concocted out of experience. Note, that this simple business plan is based on earning through adsense and affiliate marketing e.g. amazon. Should I learn about CPA & listbuilding and other income generating ideas, this simple business plan might change with time.

My Review of My Online Income System

I purchased ‘My Online Income System’ a few weeks after I got my very first blog online with my own domain name aiming to make money through the internet. I found that the information and techniques contained within the system is actually already available all over the net. But, that is, if you know where to search for it and if you don’t mind spending a lot of effort and time researching. I estimated that for my level of expertise, which is around 2 in the range of 0 to 10, I would have probably collected the same data within a year or a year and a half. And in that span of time, I would have been overwhelmed by the volume of data I have accumulated and still wouldn’t know the proper sequence with which to implement the information and whether it will work. Is that what they call information overload?

My Online Income System has this 60-day Action Plan which I think really makes sense. You may not necessarily follow it exactly as your pace depends on the level of exposure and knowledge you already have, as well as the time you can allot to the exercise. After having done a quick perusal of most of the data in the system, I got back to formally following the steps that the system elaborated on. I found that the first few days in the 60-day Action plan was perfect for me because I really don’t have that much time to focus on it as I have a day job to attend to. The first few days gently takes you through your gradual education into the world of earning money online and takes as little as 20 minutes (or less) or up to 30 minutes per day. So, if you have much time and you want to fast-track your progress, you can work through and move ahead of the suggested schedule, and make money sooner.

I’m still in the early stages of the system, but I really believe that what it’s telling me is what the veterans have been doing all the time. It makes real sense. I am positive that I, or anyone for that matter, can earn handsomely with the system. Don’t make the mistake though of assuming that ‘My Online Income System’ will allow you to make money without effort on your part. You need to burn some brain matter and a few calories in front of your computer to make it work. And it will work.

For those who have acquired familiarization and have some ideas as to how things go, the system gives them direction and leads them to where they should go, that is, make money, saving them from the hassle of trial and error.
